How Does Infliximab Work?
TREATMENT EDUCATION
Infliximab medications block a protein in your immune system called TNF alpha (tumor necrosis factor). TNF alpha causes inflammation. When you have Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis or psoriasis, your body produces too much TNF-alpha which typically regulates immune health and inflammation in the body. Too many TNF alpha cells in your immune system can lead to your body wrongly attacking cells in the GI tract, joints, spine or skin leading to inflammation.
What to Expect During Your Infusion
Before your infusion, it is important to drink plenty of water and come to your appointment hydrated. Additionally, you must alert us as soon as possible to any changes in your insurance to ensure that we are still an in-network provider for your infusion therapy.
- Pure doesn’t believe in waiting rooms. You’ll be taken to your own private suite where you’ll check in and your nurse will take your vitals and complete a pre-infusion assessment.
- To begin the infusion, an IV line will be inserted into your arm or hand. The medication will be connected and the nurse will monitor the infusion carefully, especially the first few minutes, to watch for reactions or side effects and make sure you’re comfortable.
- When the infusion is complete, your IV will be removed and the nurse will apply a bandage. Your nurse will give you instructions on side effects to watch for and when to seek help. You may be asked to stay for a short observation period.
- You can resume normal activities, though you may feel tired or need to rest. Drink water and eat a light meal to help with fatigue or nausea.
